Compare Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) Plans

Find and Compare Medicare Prescription Drug Plans from UnitedHealthcare

By design, Original Medicare doesn't provide prescription drug coverage. If you need prescription drugs, you can purchase a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

There are a number of prescription drug plans to choose from depending on where you live. Each plan has a different level of coverage with premiums, deductibles and copays to fit your health needs and budget. If you're shopping for a Medicare prescription drug plan, it's important to learn each plan's coverage and costs to decide which may be best for you.

Choosing a Medicare prescription drug plan that fits your needs

Finding a Medicare prescription drug plan can feel confusing at first. The good news is that with a few questions, you can make a more confident decision.

Review how you think you'll use the plan. Use the questions below as a starting point, take some notes, and use the links above to help with your decision.

Cost:

  • Will the plan's monthly premium and annual deductible fit your budget?
  • What are the initial coverage and out-of-pocket limits?
  • Will you need high-cost prescription drugs? Consider a plan that covers medications in the gap.
  • Do you need to stay within a budget? Find plans with a no or low deductible, or coverage gap protection.

Formulary (Drug List):

  • Which prescription drugs do you take? Find your medications on the formulary (the list of drugs covered by the plan) to compare costs.
  • Do you take brand name drugs? Or would you switch to a generic drug to lower your costs?

Pharmacies:

  • Does the plan include a pharmacy network? Is your local pharmacy included?
  • Are you willing to use a mail order pharmacy?
  • Will Walgreens work, or do you need a broader range of pharmacy options?

Medicare Prescription Drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan?

You need prescription drug coverage, but do you need other health care benefits, too? You might be deciding between a Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) plan and a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) Plans

Since Original Medicare Parts A and B don't include prescription drug coverage, a Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) plan helps cover the costs of medication. If you only need prescription drug coverage to complete your Original Medicare plan, a UnitedHealthcare Part D plan may be your best option. UnitedHealthcare Part D plans help you save money and give you peace of mind. Each plan includes commonly used generic and brand name prescription drugs, and has slightly different coverage and drug lists.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plans that Include Part D Coverage

If you're looking for more complete coverage, there's an all-in-one option. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may provide better prescription drug coverage than a stand-alone Part D plan, and offer more benefits than Original Medicare. A Medicare Advantage plan combines your doctor, hospital and prescription drug coverage with low monthly premiums—many as low as $0.

Medicare Advantage plans may include:

  • Low-cost premiums, many as low as $0
  • Prescription drug coverage for thousands of brand name and generic drugs
  • Drug copays as low as $0 with home delivery from OptumRx® 5
  • Set copays and yearly limits to out-of-pocket spending
  • Routine dental, hearing and vision coverage
  • Fitness plans and wellness programs
  • Urgent care and worldwide emergency coverage

Find out more about Medicare Advantage plans

Remember: Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Prescription Drug plans cover a certain set of prescription drugs. Before enrolling, be sure to check each plan's drug list (formulary) to see if your medications are covered. If you already have prescription drug coverage, make sure your prescriptions are covered next year, too.
