Original Medicare doesn’t cover prescription drugs. Medicare Part D prescription drug plans are available from private insurance companies like UnitedHealthcare. When you become eligible for Medicare benefits, you will need to have “creditable coverage” to avoid paying a penalty later.

You can choose from a number of Medicare Part D prescription drug plans depending where you live. Plans may have different coverage levels, premiums, deductibles and copays. If you’re shopping for a Medicare prescription drug plan, compare plan coverage and costs to decide which may be best for you.

How to choose a Medicare prescription drug plan that fits your needs

Finding a Medicare prescription drug plan can feel confusing at first. Asking yourself a few questions about how you'll use the plan may help you make a more confident choice.

Use the questions below as a starting point, take some notes, and use the links above to help with your decision.

    Cost:

    • Will the plan's monthly premium and annual deductible fit your budget?
    • What are the plan's initial coverage and out-of-pocket limits?
    • Do you need to stay within a budget? If yes, find plans with no deductible or a low deductible, and cost-shares for prescription drugs that fit your budget.

    Drug list (formulary):

    • Which prescription drugs do you take? Find your medications on the plan's formulary (the list of drugs covered by the plan) to compare costs.
    • Do you take brand-name drugs? Or would you consider switching to a generic drug on a lower tier to help lower your costs?
    • How much do your drugs cost now? What would they cost under a new plan?

    Pharmacies:

    • Does the plan include a pharmacy network? Is your local pharmacy included?
    • Are you willing to use a mail order pharmacy?

Medicare prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage prescription drug plan?

You need prescription drug coverage, but do you need other health care benefits, too? You might be deciding between a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan and a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Part D prescription drug plan

Original Medicare Part A and Part B don't include prescription drug coverage. A Medicare Part D prescription drug plan helps cover the costs of medication. If you have Original Medicare coverage and only need to add prescription drug coverage, consider a UnitedHealthcare Part D plan. These plans can help you save money and provide greater peace of mind. Each plan includes commonly used generic and brand-name prescription drugs, and has slightly different coverage and drug lists.

Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage

If you're looking for more complete coverage, there's an all-in-one option. Many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans include prescription drug coverage and offer more benefits than Original Medicare. A Medicare Advantage plan provides doctor, hospital and prescription drug coverage.

    Medicare Advantage plans may include:

    • Low or no monthly plan premium1
    • Prescription drug coverage for thousands of brand-name and generic drugs
    • Low drug copays with Optum® Home Delivery Pharmacy3
    • Set copays and yearly limits to out-of-pocket spending
    • Routine dental, hearing and vision coverage
    • Coverage for fitness benefits and wellness programs
    • Urgent care and worldwide emergency coverage

Learn more about Medicare Advantage plans

Remember: Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage and Medicare prescription drug plans cover a certain set of prescription drugs. Before enrolling, be sure to check each plan's drug list (formulary) to see if your medications are covered. If you already have prescription drug coverage, make sure your prescriptions are covered next year, too.
