Medical Specialist: Geriatric Psychiatry

Upon graduation from medical school, a doctor enters a three-year psychiatric residency program for training in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mood, anxiety, substance-abuse and gender-identity disorders, as well as and other psychological and interpersonal problems. A geriatric psychiatric fellowship offers psychiatrists an additional 12 months of training to provide them with the skills needed to manage the neuropsychiatric problems of the aging population. Geriatric psychiatrists develop expertise in managing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, providing modalities such as ECT and managing inpatient care of elderly patients with complex social, medical and psychiatric problems.
