Medical Specialist: Forensic Psychiatry

To become a psychiatrist, a doctor must complete a four-year, psychiatric-residency program for training in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mood, anxiety, substance-abuse and gender-identity disorders, as well as other psychological and interpersonal problems. Forensic psychiatry is a subspecialty of psychiatry, and an additional one to two years of training in the interplay of psychiatry and the legal system, including providing specialized treatment to incarcerated persons is required.
