Complications could include:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the reproductive organs in women. It's marked by pain in the abdomen, especially during urination or sex.

  • Urethritis is a condition in which the urethra, or the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body, becomes inflamed and irritated.

  • Bacteria that enter the urethra are usually flushed out through urination. However, bacteria that aren't expelled out of the urethra can cause an infection.

  • UTIs are usually caused by bacteria and can occur in any part of the urinary tract. Symptoms of upper UTIs include pain in the upper back, chills, fever, and nausea.
