Complications could include:

  • Arthritis is inflammation of the joints (where bones meet) in one or more areas of the body. This condition is most commonly seen in adults, but it can also develop in children and teens.
  • A lumbar puncture is a medical procedure usually performed to obtain a sample of cerebrospinal fluid. The procedure is sometimes referred to as a spinal tap.
  • Meningitis is an inflammation of the membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord. It may cause headache and fever in teens and adults, irritability in babies, and trouble breathing in young children.
  • Esophagitis is inflammation of the esophagus that can be caused by acid reflux or certain medications. You may develop a sore throat or heartburn.
  • Endocarditis is inflammation of the inner lining of the heart. Possible symptoms of this condition include pale skin, chills, and night sweats.
