Cuts and scratches are areas of damage on the surface of the skin. A cut is a line of damage that can go through the skin and into the muscle tissues below.
When your skin is cut or scraped, you begin to bleed. This is because blood vessels in the area are damaged. Learn how to stop bleeding from bloody noses, scrapes or wounds.
Bleeding can refer to blood loss inside the body (internal bleeding) or blood loss outside of the body (external bleeding). It can cause bruising, pain, and symptoms of shock. Too much bleeding can lead to death.
