Flu complications

Complications could include:

  • An ear infection occurs when a bacterial or viral infection affects the middle ear--the sections of the ear just behind the eardrum. Ear infections can be painful because of inflammation and fluid build up in the middle ear.
  • An outer ear infection is an infection in the tube that connects the opening of the ear to the eardrum.
  • A lung abscess is a bacterial infection that occurs in the lung tissue. The infection causes tissue to die, and pus collects in that space.
  • When an infant is born prematurely, the lungs may not have time to fully develop. This can lead to a variety of immediate breathing disorders.
  • Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by fungi, bacteria, or viruses. General symptoms include chest pain, fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
  • Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain tissue. It's most often caused by viral infections. In some cases, bacterial infections can cause encephalitis.
